On the heels of an extraordinary first night, WrestleMania 39 culminated Sunday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California with a blockbuster main event for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship as Roman Reigns defended against Cody Rhodes.

Elsewhere, Gunther put the Intercontinental Championship on the line in a Triple Threat match with Sheamus and Drew McIntyre, while Brock Lesnar returned to The Grandest Stage of Them All against Omos.

The unstoppable force met the immovable object to start Night 2 of WrestleMania 39 as Brock Lesnar battled Omos.

The match was infinitely better than it looked on paper. It was a ton of fun, with Lesnar selling to put over Omos' power-based offense before taking advantage of an ill-fated charge into the corner and taking him to Suplex City.

A massive F-5 ended The Nigerian Giant's night as Lesnar scored his first WrestleMania victory since 2018.

The Beast Incarnate could have easily pouted and sandbagged Omos, but he worked hard to put him over instead then eked out a win.

This was a solid way to start off the show.

    • The Nigerian Giant hoisted Lesnar up in a bearhug as Cole put over how rare it is to see The Beast manhandled to that extent.
    • Omos smacked his face on the ring post, and Lesnar delivered a German suplex and then added a second. He sold his back injury, but not enough to prevent a third suplex.

Women's WrestleMania Showcase Match

3 of 8

For the second night in a row, WWE presented a WrestleMania Showcase match aimed at getting additional participants onto the show.

Raquel Rodriguez and Liv Morgan, Natalya and Shotzi, Chelsea Green and Sonya Deville, and Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler made up the field.

It was fairly obvious who would win, but the match featured some solid work from the other three teams if nothing else. They were the ones who put in the work, doing the heavy lifting while showing off their skills.

Unfortunately, the finish was as uninspired and lackluster as possible, with Rousey and Baszler popping up at the end after contributing next to nothing and stealing the win by way of an armbar from The Baddest Woman on the Planet on Shotzi.

This was an OK match with a bad ending, and no clear direction for anyone outside of the victors makes this a creative disappointment, even if the effort was there from the competitors. Well, six of them, at least.

    • Rodriguez hoisted Morgan into a powerbomb position and then sent her over the top rope onto the rest of the field.
    • Shotzi delivered a double Sliced Bread #2, with assistance from Natalya.
    • Natalya applied a double Sharpshooter to Deville and Green, but Morgan broke it up.

Triple Threat Match for the Intercontinental Championship

Three of the hardest-hitting competitors in professional wrestling clashed over the Intercontinental Championship in the night's third match, as Sheamus and Drew McIntyre challenged Gunther in one of the show's most anticipated bouts.

    It did not disappoint.

All three competitors beat the life out of each other, bruising their chests and punishing their bodies. McIntyre and Sheamus continued to tell their story of mounting dissension, with the Scot costing his opponent the victory and title on several occasions.

Late in the match, the exhausted friends-turned-enemies unloaded on each other, culminating with Sheamus catching McIntyre with one more Brogue Kick. He covered, only for Gunther to fly in from the top rope with a splash and finish the Scot off with a powerbomb for the successful title defense.

It was going to take a truly special match to top this one Sunday night.

We knew Gunther and Sheamus had chemistry, as did McIntyre and The Celtic Warrior, but the three competitors stole the show with another instant classic to help elevate this 2023 broadcast into the realm of one of the best WrestleManias ever.

Raw Women's Championship: Bianca Belair vs. Asuka

5 of 8

Bianca Belair looked to complete one full year as Raw women's champion Sunday night. To do so, she would have to defeat, arguably, the most dangerous challenger to her throne, Asuka.

    She did. Just.

Asuka tested Belair throughout, appearing to have her in danger of losing on more than one occasion. The EST of WWE consistently fended her challenger off, usually by utilizing her power-based offense to offset her opponent's ferocity.

Late, The Empress of Tomorrow tried to spray her trademark mist in the eyes of Belair but The EST dodged it, withstood an armbar attempt and powered her up for the KOD. Three seconds later, Belair moved to 3-0 on The Grandest Stage of Them All.

Belair is quickly establishing herself as one of the best big-match performers in the industry, and a match like this being as good as it was with a crowd as into as they were, despite miniscule build, only adds credence to it.

Asuka can now sink deeper into despair on Raw, becoming more dangerous and evil in her pursuit of the title. This feud wasn't good enough, or complete enough, for a title change.

It will be, though, and all will be right with the world. For now, WWE was right to preserve what is becoming an impressive streak for The EST at WrestleMania; one it can build on moving forward if it sees fit.

    • "Whatever Belair throws at her, Asuka takes it and smiles," Corey Graves said on commentary.
    • Belair delivered a big suplex from the apron, over the top rope, to her opponent in a great display of strength.
    • A struggle for control on the ropes ended with Asuka pulling Belair to the mat with her braid and then delivering a Codebreaker for a near-fall.
    • Asuka whiffed on the mist but still managed to apply the armbar in a dramatic spot.

The Miz, Snoop Dogg and Shane McMahon

The Miz and Snoop Dogg took to the squared circle for another intermission of sorts, with the rap icon goading The A-Lister into another impromptu match.

Sunday's opponent? Shane McMahon, whose return generated a huge pop before entering the ring and trying a leapfrog that ended with him suffering a knee injury.

Snoop delivered a People's Elbow and scored the "win" to put an end to the segment.

This wasn't good, though, and only served to beg the question: Why couldn't Bobby Lashley get a match on the card instead?

Hell in a Cell: Edge vs. Finn Bálor

Finn Bálor broke out The Demon for his Hell in a Cell match with Edge, the culmination of a 10-month feud that started with the Irishman kicking the veteran out of his own Judgment Day faction and assuming leadership of it.

What was once an unstoppable force of nature, though, was humanized in a questionable bit of booking.

The Demon was dominant early, but a ladder to the head opened up a nasty gash that forced the match to stop for several minutes while trainers checked on him while Edge awkwardly walked around setting up weaponry.

Once the match kicked back into gear, it proved to be very good, but it still lacked the aggression and intensity you would hope for from a contest that was accompanied by such a long story.

Bálor whiffed on a Coup de Grace, Edge made him pay with a Spear and finished him off with a con-chair-to for the win.

The babyface going over in a match like this, the blowoff of a yearlong program, makes sense. The problem is not that Edge won but, rather, that he beat The Demon to do it. That gimmick is still a special attraction, but why beat it for a second, consecutive time? Just don't book it.

The Hell in a Cell stipulation was enough of a draw without involving The Demon, especially when it was known Edge would be going over.

It felt like a booking misstep that overshadowed what was a great display of gutsiness from a hurt Bálor and a strong match otherwise.

    Result

    Edge defeated Bálor

    Top Moments

    • Edge entered the arena to Slayer's "South of Heaven," which is ironic given that one of Damian Priest's signature moves goes by the same name.
    • Bálor drew a big pop for his Demon entrance, which did not bode well for the idea that he was the heel in this match.
    • There were red and purple weapons inside the structure, which takes away from the idea of spontaneity and a heated blowoff match.
    • Bálor suffered a nasty cut from the ladder, and the match came to a standstill as the medical personnel checked on him.
    • Bálor delivered a Coup de Grace from a conveniently placed platform on the side of the cell but missed and crashed through the table. Edge followed with a Spear for a close two-count.

Undisputed WWE Universal Championship: Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes

The pomp, circ*mstance and raw emotion all led to the most anticipated WrestleMania main event in recent memory.

Cody Rhodes received a hero's entrance before greeting his family and giving the late Brodie Lee's son his weightlifting belt.

Roman Reigns entered with pianos and pyro leading him. The fans in SoFi Stadium were ready for The American Nightmare to end The Tribal Chief's reign of terror and bring about a new era in WWE.

All the pieces were there. The moment was right. The crowd was at a fever pitch.

    And Reigns retained anyway.

A brilliant, red-hot main event that featured some of the most dramatic near-falls in 'Mania history concluded with a referee bump, interference from The Usos, and Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens making the save.

By the time Rhodes uncorked the Bionic Elbow, added his brother's drop-down uppercut and delivered consecutive Cross Rhodes to his opponent, it seemed clear he was going to take the title in a defining moment.

Then, Solo Sikoa, who had been dismissed earlier from the ringside for interference, returned and delivered a Samoan Spike. Reigns speared Rhodes, the referee counted to three, and 80,000 fans in SoFi Stadium sat in stunned silence.

Opportunities such as the one that presented itself Sunday night to create top-level talent and alter the course of wrestling history are fleeting. They do not come around often and must be seized when they do.

    WWE whiffed Sunday. Hard.

Life was sucked out of the arena. The goodwill built via Night 1 was gone. The most prestigious night in wrestling was suddenly defined by anger and sadness, not at Reigns because he is a great heel, but because WWE managed to mess up the most obvious finish in recent memory.

There are only so many times one can turn over the fans before they stop coming back. WWE skirted dangerously close with the decision to end 'Mania with Reigns still world champion.

The grade may say "A+," but that is merely for the in-ring content, which was near-flawless, but everything else represents one of the biggest creative misfires in WWE history.

    • "Who owns the Island of Relevancy? They pay for you!" Heyman told a visibly frustrated Reigns early on.
    • Rhodes attempted the Disaster Kick, but Reigns caught him and powerbombed him for two.
    • Sikoa jabbed Rhodes in the ribs with a steel chair, undetected by the official.
    • Rhodes back body-dropped Reigns off the Spanish announce table and through the U.S. one, giving The American Nightmare a reprieve from the concentrated attack on his ribs.
    • Sikoa then usedthe weightlifting belt given to Brodie to strike Rhodes. This time, referee Dan Englert ejected him from ringside.
    • The Tribal Chief caught his challenger with a Spear on the rebound but could only keep him down for two.
    • The Usos started to interfere in the match but were seen off by Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn.
