Google to discontinue Play Movies & TV: A list of the other products ‘killed’ in past - CNBC TV18 (2024)

Google has decided to discontinue two of its entertainment services -- Google Play Movies and TV application.

The company has reportedly begun the process of removing the application from Android and iOS. Additionally, it has also been removed from Roku and smart TVs.

In 2022, Google decided to make the Android TV the default one wherein one can rent, watch, and buy movies or TV shows. While now, in a recent blog post, Google mentioned that the time for Google Play Movies and TV is concluding and will be removed from Google Play and TV devices.

From January 17, 2024, the Shop tab on its interface will become the primary hub for watching previously purchased movies or TV shows and also for buying or renting further in the future. While announcing the goodbye to the services, Google has also assured the users to access the purchased titles, and active rentals in their ‘Your Library’ row on the Shop tab.

Likewise, the video-sharing app YouTube will be serving as the new platform for watching previously purchased content and buying and renting new ones from Google. This will be accessible from January 17, 2024 itself.

For the unversed, this is not the first time that the technological giant has decided to ‘kill’ its application or service as previously, Google has discontinued several of its popular services. Some of such products, apps, and services are listed here-

Google+

Google+ was a social networking platform that was owned and operated by Google until it discontinued operating in 2019, while it was launched on June 28, 2011.

Google Play Music

Google Play Music was a platform for music streaming, and it became a popular service. The standout feature of the app was the ability to upload the existing music library to it. It was launched in 2011, but discontinued in 2020.

Google Allo

The Google Allo was an instant messaging mobile app for Android and iOS mobile. It was launched in 2016 but soon after its existence, Google Allo was killed by the tech giant in 2019.

Google Stadia

It was a cloud gaming service that combined a WiFi gaming controller and allowed the users to stream through it. This extraordinary product of Google was launched in 2019 but was discontinued in 2023.

Google Surveys

It was a business tool developed by Google which focused on simplifying market research. It was initiated by Google in 2012 while after ten years of operation, the app was discontinued in 2022.
